Athletic Mouthguards in Fairfield, CT

If your kids play a sport you are probably no stranger to injuries. Whether its basketball, soccer or football- any sport has the potential to put your child in harm’s way at one point or another. And yet, denying them the chance to participate in a sport would not only be detrimental to their childhood, it would be downright cruel. At Fairfield Smiles By Design, we believe kids should have the chance to participate in sports…safely. That’s why we offer athletic mouthguards in Fairfield, CT.

Are Athletic Mouthguards Really Necessary?

While very few sports require the use of mouthguards, we strongly recommended that children wear them for the following sports:

  • Basketball
  • Softball
  • Wrestling
  • Soccer
  • Lacrosse
  • Rugby
  • Martial arts

Other recreational activities such as in-line skating, biking and skateboarding should also be performed with a mouthguard.

It’s obvious that when a child plays sports, it’s only a matter of time until they get a kick, line drive or elbow to the face. 10 percent of all dental injuries are sports related. In fact, an Illinois study states that one out of three boys and one out of four girls will experience a dental injury before they finish high school. However, when a child wears an athletic mouthguard, they greatly reduce their risk of suffering from a dental injury during sports.

For example, before they required the use of mouthguards during football 50 percent of all football injuries were oral-facial (meaning the injury was in the mouth region). However, after mouthguards were required, only 3 percent of football injuries were oral-facial. So your kid doesn’t play football? Many other sports also have a high percentage of oral facial injuries. In basketball, 21.6 percent of players suffer from a dental injury while 18.6 percent of baseball players experience an oral-facial injury.

Getting Your Child to Wear a Mouthguard

We know that it can be hard to get your child to agree to wear a mouthguard. When you buy an inexpensive stock mouthguard from a sporting goods store, they can be uncomfortable, distort your speech and can even make it hard to breathe. These mouthguards also offer very little protection. However, at Fairfield Smiles By Design, we offer athletic mouthguards in Fairfield, CT that are customized to your child’s mouth. This means that our mouthguards are comfortable and offer the best protection of your child’s teeth and oral structures. Because the mouthguards are designed to fit your child’s mouth perfectly, they stay in place on their own. Your child will not have difficulty breathing or speaking.
