Experience Dental Fear? Get Over it With Sedation Dentistry

Posted on: Friday, February 14th, 2014

From the drills, sounds, smells and scary equipment, what’s not to fear in a dentist office? A trip to the dentist can be so scary for some patients that they choose to skip it altogether and let their oral health suffer. While we understand that many Americans have a legit fear of the dentist, we also know that it doesn’t have to affect your oral health. That’s why at Fairfield Smiles By Design, we offer sedation dentistry for patients with dental fear.

Not all sedation dentistry is equal. In fact, not all sedation dentistry options will work for you. That’s why we offer three different kinds of sedation. Never miss another dentist appointment because of your fear. Instead, choose the calming power of sedation dentistry.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of sedatives to calm a very scared or anxious patient. There are many different forms of sedatives that dentists can use but all of them work by relaxing the patient for the entire duration of the visit. This helps the dentist perform much needed dental work and helps the patient lose all his or her fear and anxiety.

What types of sedation do we offer?

At Fairfield Smiles By Design we offer three different types of sedation. The reason that we offer a variety is because different patients require different types of sedation. Some require deep sedation levels while others need lighter options just to “take the edge off” of intense procedures. Our sedation options include:

  • IV Sedation: When our patients choose IV sedation, an anesthesiologist comes to our office to administer the sedation. Throughout the visit, we can control the amount of sedation that you need. Depending on how anxious you are or how painful the procedure is, IV sedation can make patients feel relaxed, sleepy or even fall asleep. This type of sedation often makes patients forget what happened during the appointment.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation: Patients who choose this option will take medicine orally up to one hour before the visit. This medication will allow you to remain conscious but time will go by very quickly. Patients who take this medicine feel so relaxed that some even fall asleep.
  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation: This type of sedation is a gas that is inhaled by the patients right before and throughout the dental work. The effects are felt in just minutes. You feel extremely relaxed and the effects wear off just minutes after the gas is taken away. This is the only sedation option that allows patients to drive themselves home after the procedure.
