Fairfield, CT— Dr. Pablo Cuevas, joined the U.S. Marines, The Boys & Girls Clubs and now the Young Adult Library Services Association in an all-out campaign to attack poverty and illiteracy in Fairfield, CT.

According to the National Center for Children in Poverty over 16 Million children in the United States live below the federal poverty level.

Dr. Cuevas, serving his community for over 20 years, was quoted as saying, “I see the situation we have in my own community and I know this is not just a local situation. This is a national situation and overwhelming.  I see the effect created by a society that doesn’t teach our youth to read and doesn’t provide good reading materials to our youth so that they CAN learn to read! But, I also see hope!”

At series of events just held in the past year, Dr. Cuevas was called upon and stepped up to the plate to sponsor books for these programs. He ensured that over 5,000 books were placed in these programs and he touched the lives of 5,000 children.

He was awarded the Commander’s Award from 3-Star General, Mr. Pete Osman of the USMC Toys for Tots Program. He was awarded the “Recognition of Duty Award” from his local Boys & Girls Chapter. Just recently, he was given a “PATRON OF LITERACY” award from the YALSA Program for his continued drive to make a better world through literacy.

Through his efforts, the cycle of poverty has begun to be broken down and he is not stopping there.

Dr. Cuevas said, “I want to do my part and I will continue to do so. But, I want every parent, professional and able individual to take a look around and help me do something about it. We can HELP!  Join me in doing something about it. We can and it will take us working as team.  If we do it, our city will grow. Our youth will become productive contributing individuals.”

Leading Dentist Joins U.S. Marines in War Against Poverty & Illiteracy

press release 1

Fairfield, CT— Dr. Pablo Cuevas, joined the U.S. Marines in an all-out campaign to attack poverty and illiteracy in our own society through the U.S. Marine Toys for Tots Literacy Program. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty over 16 Million children in the United States live below the federal poverty level. Dr. Cuevas, serving his community for over 20 years, was quoted as saying, “This is an outrage! Only someone who doesn’t care about this city and our children would keep this quiet.” “Something should be done about this!”

During a special event and banquet held in Florida honoring the U.S. Military during Military appreciation week commencing with Veteran’s Day the U.S. Marines were honored. Also recognized were the U.S. Marine Toys for Tots program and the Toys for Tots Literacy Program.

In 1947, after WWII, Toys for Tots began in Los Angeles when Major Bill Hendricks and a group of Marine Reservist collected and distributed 5000 Toys to needy children. Then in 2008 in order to do something about illiteracy, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program was launched with the mission to offer our Nations most economically disadvantaged children the ability to compete academically and succeed in life. Big named companies such as The UPS Store, FAO Schwartz, Hasbro, Toys R Us, The Walt Disney Company and many more all joined the fight in supporting the Toys for Tots Literacy Campaign.

The US Marines Toys for Tots primary objective is to help less fortunate children throughout the country experience the joy of Christmas and to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; Literacy is at the core of academic achievement for all children, and it is critical that we work together to help every child have access and exposure to books at home and in their communities. By giving the gift of reading to a child in need, you are not only opening up a world of opportunity for them, but you are giving them a lifetime of joy.

Dr. Cuevas said, “I want to do my part. And I want everyone in this city support this program. Look, not only do the Marines give the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom, but they are also leading the way in showing us that something can be done about it; something can be done about poverty and illiteracy by everyone pitching in. During the event presentation, Captain Joseph Draeger of the U.S. Marines said, “Through the gift of a book we can provide the tools needed to help break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time.”

Dr. Cuevas has now sponsored 3,100 homes in his city and surrounding communities. That means 3,100 disadvantaged families will have a Christmas this year. This is stellar!

Local Dental Office Joins with U.S. Marines in Helping Thousands of Disadvantaged families.

cuevas2Fairfield, CT— Dr. Cuevas, gathered with other leading during the annual MGE Benefit Dinner where funds were raised to provide hundreds of thousands of books to youth in a frontal assault on one of the major sources of economic destruction in America.

Illiteracy.

According to the Family Scholarly Culture and Educational Success research, access to books is key to reading skills. Studies confirm that the number of books in the home directly predicts reading achievement.

One study found that in middle income neighborhoods the ratio is 13 books per child; in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is one book for every 300 children.

“Analysis of the most statistically accurate and comprehensive study of U.S. adult literacy ever conducted proves that 48.7 percent of U.S. adults are functionally illiterate, defined as being unable to hold an above-poverty-level-wage job. We believe illiteracy is a major source of economic destruction in this country and are determined to help fix the problem,” said the Doctor.

Leading Dentist Lead the Fight Against Illiteracy in Fairfield, CT

Cuevas_R (2)Fairfield, CT— Dr. Cuevas, joined other leading dentists from around the world to analyze and take action against one of the sources of economic destruction, which affect not only their practices, but also the local community and the nation.

According to an April 2013 study by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, 32 million adults in the U.S. can’t read. That’s 14 percent of the population. The study found 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 of high school graduates can’t read. Economic security, access to health care, and the ability to actively participate in civic life all depend on an individual’s ability to read.

“We can’t just sit back and do nothing, said the Doctor, we have do something about this. These shockingly bad conditions are related to one common demoninator, illiteracy. And something workable must be done about it.”

Dr. Cuevas has been serving his community for over 20 years with excellent health care services. He has just joined the US Marines in the Toys for Tots Literacy Program to bring thousands of books into the disadvantaged homes this year for Christmas.

He agrees with Mr. Pete Osman, CEO of Toys for Tots when he says: “We believe that reading is the most important skill a young child can learn and that e gift of a book along with a toy can make a significant contribution to helping break the cycle of poverty one child at a time.”

“I will do what it takes to help every child in my community. I hope other professionals will come on board and do the same!” – Dr. Cuevas
